A marble shower will take up much less room than a standard bathtub, and it looks great on a wall, even if it is a little sparse.
But that doesn’t mean marble can’t be a challenge.
In a new issue of Slate magazine, designers Mike Dutkiewicz and Nick Nolte offer a few guidelines for designing a marble bathroom.
First, you should consider the aesthetic goals of the bathroom.
“It should be a place for people to relax and not feel like they’re being held back by any of the physical or mental barriers that exist in other spaces,” Dutkozies says.
“You can have a shower, but it should be more a place to just relax.”
Second, it’s important to consider how much marble you’ll need.
“We always recommend that people add at least one layer of marble to their bathtub,” Dutoit says.
For instance, if you’re showering, add at the very least two to four inches of marble.
You may also want to consider adding an additional layer of paint or concrete, but Dutkos says you’ll get more out of a bathtub than a marble tile.
Third, consider the aesthetics of the room.
The best marble bathrooms are often designed around simple materials.
“I don’t want to put a marble counter up against the wall,” Nolts says.
If you’re planning to shower, that’s a good idea.
But don’t forget about the décor and the lighting, as well.
“Don’t make the shower a reflection of the space, or a reflection on the wall, or the ceiling,” DUTKIES says.
A marble bathroom could have some minimal light fixtures, and maybe a little white space where you can put your hand to help keep the marble flowing.
“Think of the marble as a way to say ‘yes’ to the idea of a more open space,” NOLTS says.
Finally, if the bathroom is going to be a splash pad, the splash area should be in the middle of the bathtub.
“If the splash pad is not right there, it may feel like the marble is not being used,” Duts says.
So don’t add a splash area on top of the shower wall.
You can do that by putting the marble against the tub, and then placing a towel over the marble to help pull the marble out of the water.
“For the most part, the bath is a reflection,” Dets says.
The three-dimensional nature of marble also means that you should think of it as a mosaic.
“A mosaic is a pattern of pieces of marble that are all arranged to look like each other,” Duttos says.
This allows you to take your marble shower into your bathroom and not worry about it falling off.
If you’re a marble enthusiast, you’ll also want a marble bath curtain.
Dutkowski says, “You’ll probably want to do this at the back of the house,” as well as in a guest bedroom or other areas where marble isn’t used.
If there is a marble curtain at your house, make sure that it’s tall enough to give you a decent view of the waterfall.
“In the case of the front of the bed, you want to get the curtain up high enough to make it look like you’re looking at the shower curtain, so that it looks like the water’s flowing,” Nolin says.
But remember that a marble toilet may be better at absorbing the water than a regular bathroom.
So if you can’t get your marble bath towel out of your bathroom, you might have to purchase another marble bath rug.
